My First Garden Ever

Not so productive but a heirloom after all. There are many varieties you can grow and people have opinions to each one of them, at least a personal opinion and everyone have a different opinion, that's why flavors are made for every type of people, hurray for "the people choice", democracy at its purest!. But for me this kind of bean is not a "to die for favorite", yes it is a green bean you will not find it in any supermarket and it's flavor is very smooth and creamy, but as I said only half a pound, yes! half a pound for half of one square ft garden. Right now I have another variety growing up(a hybrid)and I hope to get more pounds next time, if not green beans will be out of the question next year. The kind of vegetables suited for the square ft garden are more of the leaf side... Lettuce, spinach, swiss chard, mesclun, beets, carrots, radishes, although I didn't succeeded with the last 3.... We are more than half way of summer and I've been getting a grip of how things work in the garden, how you should treat the different varieties of plants, what works on summer and what's not. How bad insects(pest) target different plants, how fungus develops and to attack it before it strikes, how much water my garden needs per week, etc. Today is the 31st day since I sowed my first seeds; the radishes are a total failure in the upper 90's climate as I readed, they need temperatures between 60 and 75 degrees F, so until the end of summer I'll try another shot to see if I get a better outcome in fall. The most interesting event this week are the little green pods starting to show up on my green bean plants, they need around 25 more days for the harvest to be ready and I already sowed another round of green beans, but this time I got bush blue lake 274 , so the new beans should be ready by October 18. El calor que ha hecho estas ultimas semanas es bastante, llegando a los 99 grados F aunque sintiendose como si fuesen 107, al menos eso dicen los meteorologos locales. Luego para variar, inmediatamente despues de haber plantado mi primera cosecha, los siguientes dias fueron con mucho calor, lluvia y humedad, esa fue la razon creo yo de que mis ejotes solo hayan germinado un 33%, aunque luego les afecto un hongo a algunas plantas y murieron otras pocas, todo eso junto a que tambien le habian llegado algunos insectos nocivos, pero por haberme tardado un par de dias, eso hizo que murieran unas 3 plantas de ejotes(que insectos tan ojetes). Los insectos nocivos son transmisores de enfermedades a las plantas, de no ser tratadas las plantas con insecticidades y honguicidas, tienen el riesgo de infectarse y morir, asi que compre ambos y ahora no se ven insectos"aphinoidea", ni de ningun tipo nocivo. Los unicos que he visto han sido insectos beneficos como la mosca verde de patas lar...

Hurry!, hurry!, bring the squad forces!, my garden is been invaded!. I noticed days ago some dry holes in a couple of my green beans leaves as it something was eating it and I found out aphids were flying like helicopters when I shaked some of the little plants leaves. I will have to get a spray solution for my plants. Then I found a little-tiny monster worm eating one leaf of my green bean and I made my plants some justice!, I squeezed the barbarian breath of life out of his worm body!. Some of my green beans plants are more than 6 inches tall already at just 14 days of their life. What's eating my leaves? Aphids!. What are you doing? monster!! First 14 days of  life of my first square foot garden.

One day after sowing my first vegetables seeds, the very next day we got an afternoon thunderstorm with intense heavy, but short rain. I filled a bucket of rainwater so my plants taste heaven latter on the week once again). My garden soil got plenty of cloud H2O.(Saturday, July 17). After coming back from grocery shopping at 1:30PM, another short heavy rain came out of nowhere. It seems I can't stop watching the local weather forecast for one day because you distract a little bit a boom!, there you have more rain!.(Sunday, July 18). Yesterday and today the sun didn't shine all day, sporadic showers and thunderstorms were observed last days. My radishes are going strong, almost all of them are already tiny, little plants; but my beets are worrying me because only 5 from 16 already germinated. Bajo el intenso sol de verano hoy a medio día, después de no haber podido armar ayer mi square foot garden(box) por la tarde porque mi hermano estaba ocupando el taladro y la sierra, hoy por fin esta armado. Debo decir que no me había quedado muy bien cuadrado de la base de plywood, pero al final con otros pedazos de madera que sobraron de la barda de madera que mi hermano y Antonio construyen, con eso tuve para terminar de armar mi cajón. Tres litros y medio de agua y 2 horas después ya tenia todo listo, aunque a esa hora del día y en pleno verano si que es deshidratadamente intenso. Aun me falta ponerle los separadores a la caja(16), pero eso ya se lo pondré después.

Desde hace un año aproximadamente había tenido ganas de cultivar vegetales en el departamento donde antes vivía, pero como era una terraza muy chica de cemento(sin contar que había un árbol enorme en el que no dejaba entrar la luz), la idea de llevarlo a cabo no me terminaba de convencer. Fue hasta estos principios de año que haciéndonos de nuestra casa con un patio grande la idea de sembrar y cultivar se hizo mas fuerte, solo que primero había que hacerle varios arreglos a la casa(que aun le faltan, aunque ya menos). Entonces esta temporada no pude sembrar porque el inicio de siembra que es aquí a finales de marzo o muy primeros días de abril me agarraron prácticamente en los días de la entrega de la casa y lo primero era hacer los cambios y arreglos de la casa que llevan tiempo y que ya con mas calma se terminaran en este año. Desde que vivíamos en el departamento que rentábamos antes me compre uno libros de métodos de cultivo para tener una idea de como tendría que hacerlo. Y es q...
